Architecting Economic Pathways: Testing scalable, evidence-based models for global prosperity

Better Models of Development

Building practical pathways to prosperity

Executive Summary

Development is not a solved problem. Much is known about what drives growth, and less about how to make an idea that worked in one country work in another, with different institutions and norms.

The Charter Cities Institute, founded by Mark Lutter, works on the laws and governance that new cities need. The Africa Urban Lab, founded by Kurtis Lockhart, helps fast-growing African cities reserve land for roads before people settle it, and trains city officials and planners. The Africa Jobs Fund, led by Daniel Yu and Ben Hyman, starts and backs firms that build export factories in Africa or connect trained Africans with jobs abroad. Zanzibar's government is pursuing what CHP calls a startup city, a new city that trains its own talent, in the Fumba Free Economic Zone. CHP will document what is tried there and the conditions behind each result.
